Three months of paperwork and SDI still says I owe them $400

I had a back injury in October 2023 that put me out of work for 6 weeks. I applied for state disability through EDD and got approved, everything seemed fine. Then last week I open a letter saying I was overpaid $437 and they want it back immediately. The reason they gave doesn't even match what my doctor submitted. Has anyone else fought an overpayment notice from California SDI and actually won?

My friend Sarah actually went through this exact thing with SDI last year. She had to send them the same paperwork three times before someone finally looked at it. Took her about 4 months but they did clear it eventually.

Oh man, that is so frustrating! I went through almost the exact same thing with SDI last year. I found out that the best thing to do is call the EDD and request a formal appeal, which you can do by phone or online. They gave me a deadline to submit paperwork showing what my doctor actually wrote, so I had to dig up all my medical records from that time. I ended up sending them a copy of my doctor's note with my return to work date and a letter from my doctor explaining the original timeline. After about two months of back and forth, they finally agreed it was their mistake and dropped the overpayment. I know it feels hopeless right now but don't just pay it, fight it because they make errors all the time.
