Got my old GameCube reading discs again after 3 years in a box

Found it in my parents' attic last month, covered in dust. It would spin up but never load a game. Took it apart and saw the laser lens was filthy. Cleaned it with a cotton swab and some isopropyl alcohol, just like I read on a forum. Put it back together and tried my copy of Wind Waker. It booted right up on the first try. Anyone have tips for keeping the laser assembly from getting dirty so fast?

White lithium grease on the laser rail? I would be so scared of getting that stuff on the lens itself.

My old Xbox 360 had the same gummy rail issue. I agree with @park.nathan about being careful, but a tiny dab on a toothpick worked for me and never touched the lens. The real trick is cleaning the old grease off first with some isopropyl.

Honestly that's awesome, good job fixing it. I did the same thing with my old PS2 last year, it was skipping cutscenes like crazy. Took the whole thing apart and the laser rail was totally gummed up with this sticky dust. Put a tiny bit of white lithium grease on the rail and it moves smooth as butter now. Keeping it in a cabinet with the dust cover on seems to help a lot.
