Had to choose between using a heat gun or a hair dryer to reflow my PS3 - picked the hair dryer and wow what a mess

Dude I did the exact same thing last year with my old fat PS3. Thought I'd save money by using the wife's hair dryer instead of buying a heat gun. Ended up melting a couple of the plastic fan mounts and had to epoxy them back together which looked terrible. The motherboard got way too hot in one spot and I think I cooked a capacitor because now it won't output video at all. That hair dryer just doesn't have the focused heat you need for reflowing, it spreads everything out and makes a mess of the nearby parts. Live and learn I guess, now I just buy used consoles instead of trying to fix them myself.

Heat guns are cheap enough. Learn the lesson and move on.
