Is thermal paste spreading method really that important? My PS3 repair story.
So I fixed a friend's PS3 last month, the one with the YLOD issue. I read everywhere that the pea-sized dot is the only way to go for the RSX and CELL chips. But I decided to try spreading it thin with a plastic card instead, like I do for PC CPUs. It booted up fine and ran for 6 hours straight playing Gran Turismo. Now I'm wondering if all the debate about the perfect method is overblown. Has anyone else had good luck just spreading it themselves on these older consoles?

People spend so much time obsessing over the little details when half the time the simple approach works just fine.

Man, that reminds me of when I tried to fix my lawnmower by just hitting it with a hammer and it actually worked.
