My attempt to fix a PS3's disc drive with a YouTube guide and a butter knife cost me $80 for a new laser assembly.
Has anyone actually had luck with those 'quick fix' videos, or should we all just accept the need for the right tools?

My brother's Xbox 360 red ring fix with a towel lasted exactly three days.

Three days is actually pretty good for the towel trick. Most of the time those things crap out in 24 hours or just don't boot up again. He must have hit the sweet spot where the thermal paste was just melted enough but not cooked off completely. It's still a dumb fix but I give credit where it's due. At least he got a weekend out of it before it went back to the red ring void.
