My friend swore thermal paste doesn't matter on old consoles and I proved him dead wrong

My buddy Dave told me any cheap thermal paste works fine for a 20 year old Xbox, so I slapped some generic white stuff on my 360 last month. Three weeks later the thing started shutting down during GTA V sessions because the GPU was hitting 85 degrees. I cracked it open again and the paste had already dried out and flaked off like old paint. Replaced it with some Arctic Silver I use on customer cars and the temps dropped 20 degrees overnight. Dave still insists I wasted money but my console runs quiet now even after 4 hour marathons. Has anyone else had random brand paste fail on them or did I just get a bad tube?

Kick this up a notch - nobody's talking about how the pressure from the mounting screws changes everything with cheap paste. The generic white stuff is usually too thin and runny, so when you tighten the heatsink it just squishes out the sides and leaves a gap. Then it dries up fast because there's barely any left doing the actual job. I've seen people blame the paste when really it was their screw torque spreading it too thin. Those old 360s are picky about mounting pressure too, the board flexes weird if you overtighten one corner. The Arctic Silver holds its shape better under pressure so it stays put where it needs to be.

Dude the paste literally flaked off like old paint?? That's wild lol. I've only ever used Arctic Silver or the stuff that comes preapplied on coolers, never seen thermal paste turn into dust before. Generic white goop sounds like something they'd use on a space heater, not a console that needs to transfer heat properly. Glad your Xbox is purring like a kitten now after the swap.

It connects to this bigger trend where companies cheap out on stuff we can't see, like the paste inside a console or the glue holding furniture together. You only notice when it falls apart years later, and by then they've already moved on to selling you the next thing. Makes you wonder what other "good enough" shortcuts are hiding inside the stuff we use every day.
