Pulled apart my PS4 three times before realizing the thermal paste was the problem

Last Tuesday I was trying to fix my son's PS4 that kept shutting off after 20 minutes of play. I had already replaced the fan and cleaned out all the dust but it still overheated. Turns out the old thermal paste on the processor had dried up completely like chalk. After I cleaned it off and put on fresh Arctic Silver paste the console has been running quiet for 5 days straight. Has anyone else dealt with a system that acts fine until it warms up?

Scraped off that chalky mess myself @daniel511. It's humbling when the simplest fix nearly got skipped.

Felt that one in my bones, man. Took me three teardowns of my old gaming laptop before I realized the paste had basically turned into gray dust and I was just wasting my time blowing canned air at it. Made me feel like a master engineer who forgot to check if the engine had oil.
