Rant: my buddy swears by hot air rework for HDMI ports, I think that's how you lift pads
He fixed his PS5 port in 20 minutes with a $35 hot air station from a pawn shop in Akron, but my own attempt on an Xbox One left three pads gone and I've been trying to convince him flux and a soldering iron is safer, anyone else land on one side or the other?

Man, losing three pads on that Xbox One job really stings and I feel for you. I've been in that same spot where your buddy makes it look easy and then you try it and the board just falls apart on you. The thing that gets me is everyone acts like hot air is the only real way to do it but nobody talks about how fast things go wrong when you don't have the right tip or your temps are off. Honestly a fine tip iron with good flux and some wick has saved me way more times than hot air ever did. Your buddy probably just got lucky on that PS5 or he's done enough of them that his hands know the timing. Stick with what works for you and don't let him talk you into frying another board.
