The PS2 at the local flea market had a weird fix I'd never seen before

I was at the flea market in San Antonio last weekend and saw a vendor selling a fat PS2. He said it wouldn't read discs, so he'd opened it up and put a piece of folded cardboard under the laser assembly to tilt it. He claimed it worked for about a week before failing again. In my experience, that's a really bad band-aid fix that can mess up the gears. Has anyone else run into these kinds of oddball repairs out in the wild, and what did you do to actually fix the console?

I saw a guy use a paperclip to hold a Dreamcast lid switch down, which is just asking for trouble.

Used to think paperclips were fine but nope, you're totally right.
