Converted to the paper towel trick after a sticky mess at the ren faire

I used to think pre-infusing your puck was just for fancy machines, not for us budget folks with a $60 DeLonghi. But last weekend at the local ren faire, I watched this guy pull a shot on a tiny stovetop using a damp paper towel on top of his grounds. He said it helps the water spread even before pressure hits, and I was skeptical. Went home and tried it with my cheap basket, using a circle I cut from a bounty sheet. First shot came out way less channeled and had a tiny bit of crema, something I never get. Now I'm experimenting with how wet the towel should be, like a damp sponge not dripping. Has anyone else tried this with a non-pressurized basket?

Have you noticed a difference in how much water pools on top of the puck after you add the paper towel? I'm curious if it keeps the surface from getting that brown soup look before the pressure kicks in.
