Temp surfing is overrated, my $10 thrift store machine makes better shots

Honestly, last month I ditched the whole temp surfing routine everyone swears by on here. I've been pulling shots on a 2007 Breville I got from a garage sale in Portland, and I let it heat up for 20 minutes, no fancy flush dance. Ngl, the first week I tried all the tricks from the sticky guide, but my shots were bitter and sour by turn. Three years ago I would've blamed the grinder, but now I think most home setups are good enough if you just dial in the dose and yield. Has anyone else gone back to basics and found their coffee actually got better without the ritual? I'm curious if I'm just lucky or if this is a real pattern.
