Tried the paper filter trick on my cheap espresso machine last weekend and wow
Honestly, I was skeptical at first. I cut a standard drip coffee filter into a small circle and put it on top of my puck before pulling a shot. Ngl, it smoothed out the flow way more than I expected and stopped those random channeling issues I always get. My machine is a $150 De'Longhi, not exactly a pro setup. I ran 3 shots back to back and all of them came out with way less bitterness and a nicer crema. Has anyone else tried this with a bottomless portafilter or is that asking for trouble?

Tbh I was in the same boat as you. I thought the paper filter thing was just another internet hack that wouldn't actually help with a cheap machine. But after my third shot with one on my Breville I had to admit it really made a difference. The coffee came out cleaner and I didn't get that weird bitter hit at the end like usual.
