Two dollar shower brush beat my fancy distribution tool

I had a conversation with a barista at a shop in Portland last month who said he levels his basket with a cheap bristle brush from the hardware store. I laughed it off until I tried it myself on my Breville and pulled three shots that came out way more even than with my $35 distributor. He showed me the trick, you just spin the bristles over the grounds for a few seconds and tap lightly before tamping. Has anyone else found weird household items that work better than the pricey gadgets?
