Am I the only one who skips sanding before painting furniture?

I painted an old chair without sanding it first. The paint stuck well and the rough texture looks cool, but everyone says to sand. Is sanding really needed for every job?

Wait, the paint stuck to a laminate table and then just peeled off in one sheet? That's wild, I've never seen that happen before. It sounds like a nightmare to clean up. Maybe some surfaces are just too smooth for paint to ever really grab onto. I'd be scared to try it again after seeing something like that.

No sanding and the paint stuck? That goes against everything I've ever seen. Sanding roughs up the surface so the paint has something to grip. Without it, paint often just sits on top and chips off easily. I tried skipping it once on a laminate table, and the whole finish peeled like a bad sunburn. Maybe your chair had just enough dirt for the paint to hold, but that's playing with fire. Most of the time, you're asking for a redo in a few months.

Seriously, does it always have to be that way? I've painted plenty of stuff without sanding and it held up fine. Like that old dresser I did last year, no sanding and it's still perfect. Maybe it depends on the paint or the surface, but not everything needs the full prep. It feels like people make it a bigger deal than it is sometimes. Just my two cents lol.
