Finally realized I've been cutting baseboard trim wrong for ages

I was installing some new quarter round in my living room and kept getting these tiny gaps at the corners, even with my miter box. My dad came over, watched me for a minute, and said 'you're lining the trim up flat against the back fence, aren't you?' I was, and he showed me you have to tilt the piece slightly to match the wall's angle. Has anyone else had a lightbulb moment with something basic like this?

How did I not know this either? My last trim job was a total mess, and now I know why.

Remember that time I tried to cut my own bangs? It's the same kind of misplaced confidence, just with less hair on the floor. I guess some lessons you just have to learn the hard way.

That "tilt it slightly" trick... I felt so dumb when I learned it. I'd been fighting with trim for years, blaming my tools the whole time. My house is basically a monument to my stubbornness.
