My bathroom reno hit a wall with a stud finder that lied to me

Spent 4 hours last Sunday trying to hang a new vanity mirror because my $20 stud finder kept beeping on hollow spots. Turns out the previous owner patched the drywall with no backing behind it. Had to rip out a 2x4 piece of drywall and install blocking by hand. How do you guys find studs when the house is older than the tool you're using?

Your $20 stud finder" is the problem, not the drywall. Spend $60 on a good magnetic one.

Wait, have you actually tried a good magnetic one yourself? I was in the same boat last year, frustrated with those cheap electronic ones that beep at everything. @the_sage is right that a magnetic stud finder changed the game for me. I got a $50 one and it just finds the nails in the drywall instantly with no fuss. No guessing, no beeping at pipes or wires. That made hanging my shelves way less annoying.
