My neighbor in Omaha saw me struggling with a miter cut and said 'Kid, your saw is fine, your eyes are lying'.

Ever try a speed square as a guide? That old trick saved me a ton of frustration when my cuts were always off.

Yeah, that's a solid point from @angelaellis. I mean, I keep one right next to my saw now because of it. It's not just for marking 90s either, you can use the lip to run your saw against for a bunch of common angles. Makes everything way more repeatable, idk why it took me so long to try it.

That thing about "your eyes are lying" hits home. I had a neighbor who swore by the same thing (he was a retired carpenter, so you had to listen). @green.victor, your point about using the lip for common angles is dead on. I remember spending an afternoon trying to cut baseboards for a weird corner in my hallway, and nothing lined up. Finally, I just clamped a speed square as a fence against my miter saw's fence (yeah, a bit janky but it worked) and suddenly every cut matched. The funny thing is, I almost tossed that speed square out because I thought it was only for marking studs. Now it's the first tool I grab for anything with an angle. Took me way too long to learn that simple trick.
