My neighbor's comment about my wonky fence post made me realize I was overthinking the repair.
He said, 'Just sister it with a 2x4 and three lag bolts, it'll outlast the house,' and for some reason that basic fix never crossed my mind after watching a dozen complex YouTube tutorials.

Understand the appeal of a quick fix, but sistering a post just hides the real problem. If the post is rotting at the base, all you've done is attach new wood to failing wood. It's better to dig out the old post and set a new one in concrete for a permanent solution.

Yeah, but @seanh91, sometimes a sistered post is all the weekend and budget allow.

My uncle's fence has had a sistered post for fifteen years now. Sometimes the simple fix is the right one.
