My uncle said my floating shelf install was 'overbuilt' for a few books

I used three heavy duty brackets and lag bolts into every stud for a simple 4-foot shelf in my living room. He laughed and said he would have just used two basic anchors and called it a day, since it's just holding some novels. Is there such a thing as too sturdy for a basic home project, or is overkill always the right call?

Three brackets into every stud? That's the normal way to do it. What does he mean anchors? Like the plastic ones for drywall? That shelf would be on the floor in a month. Your uncle is giving out dangerous advice.

Ever notice how people give advice on stuff they've never actually done? My neighbor swore by those plastic anchors until his towel rack ripped out of the wall. Some folks just repeat what they heard once.
