Tried painting my kitchen cabinets without sanding them first. Big mistake or worth it?

I watched like 5 YouTube videos saying liquid sanding deglosser works just as good as actual sanding. So I went for it on my oak cabinets last Saturday, used the deglosser and a good primer. After 2 days the paint is peeling off in spots where the old finish was really shiny. Now I'm wondering if I just used a cheap deglosser or if sanding is the only real way. Anyone else try deglosser and have it work out better?

Deglosser works fine if you really scrub it in with a green scouring pad and wipe it off right away. Sounds like you might've let it sit too long or didn't scrub the shiny spots enough. I've used the Klean-Strip brand on laminate cabinets before and it held up for years just had to make sure every inch got hit with the pad. Next time try hitting those glossy areas with a light sanding sponge after the deglosser dries just to give the primer something extra to bite into.

You ever have a buddy who did this exact thing and ended up repainting the whole kitchen twice? My friend Mike tried deglosser on his cabinets and skipped the scrubbing part, ended up with peeling paint in six months. He said the second time around he sanded everything like you suggested and it actually stuck.
