Halloween week chaos, my cat scared a trick-or-treater in his lion suit

Last Saturday I threw together a quick lion mane from an old orange scarf and some felt, no sewing, just hot glue. My cat Dusty wore it fine for photos, but when the doorbell rang for the first trick-or-treater, he bolted and the mane flopped over his eyes, making him crash into the screen door. The poor kid screamed and dropped his candy bag, and Dusty then sat on the spilled KitKats like a proud king. Has anyone else had a pet costume go sideways at the worst moment, and how do you keep the ears or hoods from slipping mid-run?

That lion mane story hits close to home. My dog once wore a pirate hat for a photo, and the second he saw the mailman, he took off down the hallway with the hat over one eye, straight into the kitchen cabinet. The trick is to make sure the costume fits snug but not tight, so it can't shift. I ended up sewing a little elastic strap under the chin on the hat, and that kept it from slipping even when he did his crazy zoomies. Another thing that worked for me was doing a quick test run in the yard before the real event, just to see if the costume would survive a sudden sprint. If you can, skip hoods or anything that covers the eyes, because that's always the first thing to slide around. Maybe just try a collar with a fake mane instead, way less drama for the cat and the kids.
