I finally got called out on my dog's pirate costume last Halloween

My neighbor Karen told me the eye patch I made out of felt was too small for my beagle, and she was right. I used a 2 inch circle but his eyes are closer together than I thought, so it kept sliding off. Redid it with a 3 inch patch and some elastic string from Joann Fabrics, fits perfect now. Anyone else ever have a costume detail totally miss the mark on sizing?

Wait until you try making a tail that actually stays on. I spent three hours last Halloween cutting and stitching a foam tail for my pug's dragon costume, only to have it droop sideways after five minutes because the base was too flimsy. I ended up hot-gluing a paperclip inside as a wire frame, which worked but poked through the fabric by 8pm (lesson learned, double layer the felt or use pipe cleaners instead). For the eye patch problem specifically, I'd suggest tracing his actual eye socket shape onto paper first, then cutting the felt with a 1/4 inch border around that line. It saved me on a set of cat ears that kept flipping backward because the cardboard inside was cut too small. The real trick is measuring on the animal while they're relaxed, not squirming around for treats.
