Velcro strips on furry dogs are a disaster if you skip the trim

Last Halloween I watched my corgi squirm out of his hot dog bun costume in under 2 minutes because the sticky pads grabbed his undercoat instead of the fabric, so now I trim a clean patch on his chest first and ask: has anyone else found a better fastener for long-haired pets that doesn't need shaving?

Wait, you actually put a costume on a corgi and expected it to stay? Mine treats any clothing like a personal crime scene. I've had better luck with the little elastic band harnesses from the dollar store, they just slip over the back without touching the fur much. Still gotta trim the chest though, nothing beats that for keeping the velcro off the fluff.
