A fellow builder told me I was using the wrong kind of moss
Last week a guy at the local plant swap looked at my terrarium and said the moss I used was going to rot in about a month. He was right. I had been using sheet moss from a craft store that was already dead and dyed. He said to try live cushion moss instead, which I found at a nursery for $8. I swapped it out and now the whole thing stays green and healthy. Anyone else get bad advice on moss from YouTube tutorials?

Jumped right into that trap myself a few months back. Picked up a bag of "preserved moss" from a craft store because every terrarium tutorial on YouTube said it was the same as live stuff. Big mistake. It turned into a sad brown mush with tiny white mold spots after two weeks. Real game changer was finding an actual moss supplier online that sells live clumps. Got a little mix of cushion and fern moss for like $12 shipped and now my jar looks like a mini forest instead of a dried up craft project.

My friend Jenna bought that same preserved moss from Michael's. She was so excited about her first terrarium, watched like ten tutorials. Two days later the whole thing smelled like wet basement and she had to toss everything but the rocks.
