Had to pick between moss and sand for my terrarium base - went with sand and now I've got a Sahara in a jar

Is it really that bad though? I've seen some people pull off the sand look without everything dying on them. Maybe you just need to pick plants that don't mind dry conditions?

Had a buddy who tried the same thing last year. He was so proud of his little desert theme and then a month later the sand was everywhere inside the glass, all over his desk, and the plants were just dying one by one. He ended up having to scoop the whole thing out and start over with moss because the sand just would not hold any moisture at all. Now he jokes about it but I remember him being pretty bummed for a while. Sand looks cool but it's a total pain to work with if you want anything to actually live in there.
