Moss layer turned into a swamp after my first rain attempt

So I'm building this closed terrarium in a big pickle jar I got from a deli in Austin, and I thought I was being clever by adding a thick moss carpet. Two days after sealing it, I came home and the glass was completely fogged up, like a bathroom after a hot shower. I opened it and the moss was sitting in a puddle of water that smelled like old gym socks. Turns out I over-misted and my drainage layer was too shallow, maybe half an inch of pebbles instead of the inch I needed. I had to take everything out, wipe the jar dry, and rebuild with a proper false bottom using some mesh I found in my craft drawer. Now I check condensation every morning before coffee and I'm way more careful with the spray bottle. Anyone else had their first closed terrarium turn into a bog?
