So I tested charcoal vs. moss as a drainage layer in two identical jars
I made two small fern terrariums in the same kind of jar about a month ago. One got a half-inch layer of activated charcoal bits under the soil, the other got the same amount of sphagnum moss. The moss jar started smelling a bit funky after just two weeks, but the charcoal one still looks and smells fresh. I think the charcoal really does a better job keeping things clean. Has anyone else found a clear winner for their drainage setup?
