That guy at the garden center said my moss would die if I didn't use distilled water, and now 6 months later half my terrariums are thriving on tap.

He was so sure about it at the nursery in Portland last spring, but has anyone else found that their local tap water works fine as long as you let it sit out for a day?

Blew up my first terrarium with tap water before I learned the sitting out trick. Thought I was being smart using the hose to fill my moss jars, ended up with a slimy mess that smelled like a wet dog. Now I just fill a milk jug from the sink and leave it on the counter for a day before using it on anything picky. My ferns and moss don't seem to care one bit about the local water chemistry.

3 years ago I had a fern explode after using tap water from Denver. @shah.olivia the milk jug trick works but you gotta let it sit uncovered, not with a cap on. Chlorine needs to evaporate out and that won't happen if you seal it up. I leave a gallon jug open on my counter for 24 hours and my mosses have been fine.
