Garden center folks really know how to cut through all the noise (bless their hearts). Had a lady at my local nursery tell me to just "trust the plant" when I asked about repotting a fern for the third time. Sometimes you just gotta listen to them and stop trying to engineer a perfect little ecosystem in a pot.

Hold on, you really think just chucking a fern in some dirt and forgetting about it is a good idea? My neighbor did that "trust the plant" thing with a fiddle leaf fig and it dropped every single leaf within a month because the soil was garbage and the pot had no drainage. Some plants are fickle and need specific conditions, like that fancy orchid your aunt got that dies if you look at it wrong. A basic tomato cage might work for some determinate varieties, but for those monster indeterminate ones you need a sturdy setup or the whole thing flops over in a storm. Garden center folks give basic advice because they deal with hundreds of people a day, not because it's the best advice for your specific situation.

That garden center lady telling you to "trust the plant" with a fern is basically saying ferns are bulletproof, which is true until they're not. Maybe it's just me but I've seen a fern get crispy in a week because someone put it near a vent, so idk if "trusting it" is always the move.

3 different nurseries in my area have told me the same thing basically. It's like we all get so caught up in the details we forget the plant just wants to sit in some dirt. @eric_murphy36 you're right that garden center people cut through the noise. I see the same pattern with my neighbor who spent 2 hours researching the perfect tomato cage when a basic one from the hardware store would have done the job.
