That 'moss in a jar' trend I laughed at - now I have 12 terrariums on my desk

I totally thought those tiny glass gardens with moss were a waste of time. Last March my friend in Portland dared me to try one with a jar from my kitchen. I used a $5 bag of sphagnum moss and some pebbles from my driveway. Three months later that thing was still alive and looking great while my houseplants kept dying. Now I'm building closed terrariums with isopods and ferns and they manage themselves for weeks. Has anyone else had a cheap setup work better than expensive kits?

Same. My first one was a pickle jar. Now I've got twelve too. It's addicting.

That twelve collector thing sneaks up on you fast... just make sure you're labeling the lids so you don't end up with mystery pickles from three years ago.
