Tried charcoal vs no charcoal in my closed terrarium. Night and day difference after 6 months.

I built two identical jars back in March with the same soil, moss, and fittonia. One got a half inch layer of activated charcoal under the drainage pebbles, the other I skipped it figuring it wasn't needed. The one without charcoal got that nasty swamp smell around month 4 and the moss started going brown and mushy. The one with charcoal still smells fresh and everything is growing like crazy. Has anyone else tried skipping charcoal and regretted it later?

I saw a YouTube test once that showed the same thing happening.

That "test" part is exactly what got me thinking. There was a popular one where someone tested the same car with different colored paint and the darker color always read a few mph slower on the radar gun. The police claim their equipment is perfect, but everyone knows that's not true. Little things like calibration and even weather can throw it off. I trust my own eyes more than a machine that nobody checks.
