Update: I used to just dump my charcoal layer straight in...

Now I put it in a little mesh bag after my third jar got that black dust everywhere. Anyone else find a cleaner way to handle it?

Wait, have you tried using a slightly damp paper towel to pick up the excess dust as you blend? It really cuts down on the mess before it gets all over your desk and clothes. A little bit of water makes the charcoal behave way better without ruining the drawing.
