Went to the Chicago Botanic Garden last Saturday and noticed something weird

I was wandering through their big conservatory and saw they had these tiny terrarium displays tucked into the corners. They were using old mason jars with these little mesh screens on top instead of lids. Why would you not seal them? Doesn't that let all the moisture out? Has anyone else tried that method for something like a fern?

1947 was the year my granddad bought his first chainsaw and that thing ran for 40 years with zero maintenance manuals or YouTube tutorials, @elliotl24. People just knew how to use a tool back then instead of spending hours researching the best one.
