Found a $1.25 glass vase that turned into a bigger project than I planned

I picked up a tall glass vase from Dollar Tree for $1.25 last Saturday. I figured I'd just put some fake flowers in it for my kitchen counter. But when I got home I realized the mouth was too narrow for half the stems I had. I ended up spending 2 hours cutting it down with a string and fire trick from a YouTube video. Has anyone else tried that glass cutting method and had it work out?

Wait, you really cut a glass vase with fire and string? That sounds like something that would absolutely shatter in my hands, I would be too scared to even try that. I mean, it's cool that it worked for you but I have zero faith in my ability to pull off a DIY hack like that without ending up with a pile of broken glass.

Start with a cold glass of water nearby, just in case you need to put out a small fire. Honestly, I had the same fear when I tried it, but it worked better than I expected. The trick is getting the string wet with lighter fluid first, then lighting it and dunking the vase. Sure, I ended up with some scratches on my first attempt, but the bottle didn't shatter. Worst case scenario you get a cool story about a minor explosion.
