My cheapo picture frames finally look expensive

I was at the Dollar Tree last weekend and overheard a lady telling her friend she uses black craft paint on the inside edges of cheap frames to make them look deeper. She said it tricks the eye into thinking the frame is way fancier than it is. I tried it on three 5x7 frames I had sitting around and they actually look like something from a real home decor store. Has anyone else tried painting the inside of frames to fake that shadowbox effect?

Wait, does this mean I've been staring at those cheapo frames from Walmart wrong this whole time? I tried this on some 8x10s and my dumb self accidentally painted the front edge too, so now they look like I framed my kid's macaroni art in a goth shadowbox. But the ones I got right seriously look 10x better, like I actually spent more than 3 bucks on them. Even my wife walked by and said "hey those don't look totally garbage anymore" which is basically a compliment in our house.

My Dollar Tree frames went from looking like I stole them from a preschool to actually passable after I did this, but I also dripped paint on the glass and spent twenty minutes scraping it off with a razor blade. @oliver523 at least your macaroni art has a cool story, mine's just a photo of me making the same face I did in 2012. I'm definitely not telling my wife I painted them either so she'll think I finally developed taste.
