My neighbor called my dollar store herb garden a waste of time
She walked over while I was planting basil seeds in those little plastic cups from Dollar Tree and said I'd be better off just buying fresh herbs. I've been doing this for 2 years now and my basil actually grows fine, but her comment made me wonder if I'm saving any money at all. Anyone else do the math on their dollar store gardening projects?

Wait, did she actually call it a waste of time or did she just say you'd be better off buying fresh herbs? There's a difference there. I've been growing herbs in repurposed containers for about five years now and the real savings come from how much you actually use... a single basil plant can give you leaves for months if you pick them right. The dollar store cups are fine for starting seeds, just make sure you poke extra drainage holes in the bottom or you'll get root rot.
