Picked up some cheap glass paint markers from Dollar Tree...

I was at a friend's place last weekend and saw she had these old mason jars turned into cute little vases with just some paint marker scribbles on them. She said she got the markers from Dollar Tree and they've held up through like 5 washes in the sink. Has anyone else tried using those paint markers on glass or other tricky surfaces?

actually that's not quite right about them holding up through washes. I gotta say I tried those same Dollar Tree paint markers on some beer bottles a while back and the paint started peeling off after like two gentle hand washes. maybe your friend got lucky or used some kind of sealer on top? I painted some designs on a glass jar for my mom and the marker literally came off in chunks when she tried to rinse it out. the ink just doesn't bond that well to glass without a proper primer or baking process in the oven. so if anyone wants those to last more than a few days they should probably hit them with a clear spray sealer or something first.

Actually you're mixing up two different types of markers there. Dollar Tree sells both regular paint pens and their "oil based" paint markers. The regular ones are basically just craft paint in a pen form and yeah those come right off glass. But the oil based ones (they come in a 4 pack with silver, gold, black, white) actually hold up way better. I've had designs on mason jars last through a dishwasher cycle no problem. Still not bulletproof though, you're right about the sealer helping. But I'd say the oil based ones are a different beast than the standard acrylic paint markers.
