Those glass candle holders make great cheap vases...

I noticed something last month while I was stocking up on craft paint at my local Dollar Tree in Phoenix. People keep walking right past the candle aisle but those plain glass candle holders they sell for $1.25 are literally the same shape as the $15 vases at HomeGoods. I grabbed three of them and some acrylic paint from the same store, spent maybe $4 total. After peeling off the labels with some warm water and baking soda, I painted a simple ombre effect on them. They look really nice on my kitchen window sill now. Has anyone else tried this or found other dollar store glass items that work for home decor?

The 3 Dollar Tree stores near me in Austin all have those candle holders with slight scratches or cloudy spots that won't come off no matter how much you scrub. I tried the same project with painted ombre and the cheap glass just made the colors look muddy and uneven compared to real vases. Plus the glue from those labels leaves a residue that shows through lighter paint colors even after soaking.

Wait did you try rubbing alcohol or Goo Gone on that label glue first?
