A structural engineer in Charlotte flagged my beam hanger placement, glad he did

I was doing a deck tie-in last month and had the hangers set with the wrong nail pattern, top flange only on the joist side. The engineer walked by, stopped, and said 'you're going to shear those out by spring' and he was right. I looked it up after he left and the spec called for double shear nails on every hanger, not just the end ones. Redid all 14 connections before the inspector came, cost me a half day but saved a callout. Now I check the manufacturer's label on every hanger before I touch a nail gun. Has anyone else had a trade catch something that basic that you just never questioned?

Ever notice how the little stuff on the label is always the stuff that actually matters? Yeah, I've had a guy point out a missing top plate anchor on a load bearing wall that I'd done a hundred times before. Half the battle is just admitting your routine might be wrong.
