Debate: Tracing paper vs digital layers for rough layouts

I had a wild week last June where I ended up doing both. Spent Monday with a roll of tracing paper on a light table at an old firm in Portland, then Wednesday got handed a tablet with layers for the same kind of work. The paper felt faster for big changes, but the digital stuff saved me from smudging and re-drawing four times. How do you all handle the transition between the two, or do you stick with one method?

The "paper felt faster for big changes" part is interesting because I think people miss how tracing paper actually helps your BRAIN see the drawing different than digital. When I stack multiple sheets on a light table, the physical thickness changes how I perceive the layers underneath in a way screens don't replicate. There's a tactile feedback thing where flipping between sheets feels more intuitive than tapping layer visibility on and off. I keep a roll in my desk drawer specifically for those early rough sketches, then snap a photo and load it into Procreate when I need to tighten things up.

The light table trick with multiple sheets is something I've been doing for years too, especially for figure drawing. A big thing I found that helps is using a binder clip on the corner of the stack to keep everything aligned while you flip. That way the registration doesn't shift, and you can still lift the top sheet up and down without messing up the drawing underneath.
