Just read a survey that said 40% of drafters still don't use a proper layer naming standard.

I found this in a PDF from the AUGI forums and it makes me wonder how many projects are a total mess from the start.

My last project was a total alphabet soup nightmare.

Honestly, that number seems low based on what I've seen. A lot of smaller shops and solo drafters get by just fine with a system that makes sense to them, even if it's not a formal industry standard. The real mess happens when there's no internal consistency at all on a team.

Yeah, that's the real killer, when everyone on a team is using their own secret code. I've walked onto jobs where the last guy's layer names were just inside jokes. My rule is, if a new person can't open your file and find a wall type in under a minute, your system is broken. It doesn't have to be fancy, it just has to be dead simple and written down somewhere. Even a one-page cheat sheet taped to the monitor beats total chaos.
