Just realized I've been drafting wrong since I started

I was at a shop in Detroit last week and an old drafter showed me how he sets up his baseline before even touching the CAD. He pointed out I was skipping the foundation check and just jumping into layers, which caused me to redo half my drawing later. Anyone else ever get a tip from an old timer that made you feel like you'd been doing it backwards for years?

Heard a guy on a podcast say the best drafters spend half their time planning and the other half drawing - did that old timer give you a specific checklist to run through before you start?

Wait, half the time planning?? That can't be right. Who's got that kind of time? Most days I'm lucky if I get 5 minutes of planning before diving in.

The 5 minutes of planning thing is exactly why your drafts probably need way more fixing than they should. Even a solid 10 minutes upfront saves you hours of redoing garbage later.
