Met a drafter at a coffee shop who showed me his trick for complex roof plans

I was waiting for my order at Muddy Bean on 3rd Street last Thursday and this older guy saw my roll of plans on the table. He asked if I ever used a 0.5mm mechanical pencil for shading and I said no, always used 0.7. He grabbed a napkin and sketched out a roof valley with cross-hatching that made the pitch look 3D instantly. Has anyone else picked up a weird little habit like that from a random stranger in public?

Wait, hold up - he did this on a NAPKIN?? Like a regular flimsy coffee napkin that falls apart if you look at it wrong? That's wild. I can barely get a straight line on graph paper half the time, let alone cross-hatch a roof valley on something that's practically tissue paper. @sam_anderson you're totally right about the headphones thing too, I bet I've walked past dozens of people with game-changing tips just because I was zoned out listening to some podcast about true crime or whatever. Makes me wonder how many napkin masters are out there just waiting for someone to ask the right question. I might actually start leaving my earbuds at home when I grab coffee now, honestly.

Honestly that’s the kind of stuff you can’t learn in a classroom or from a YouTube video. I’ve been installing floors for years and the best little tricks I know came from some random guy I met at a lumber yard back in 2010. He showed me this way to mark a cut line with just a scrap piece of trim and a pencil that I still use every single week. It’s wild how much simple knowledge is just walking around in people’s heads waiting for a coffee shop moment. I bet that drafter has a hundred more napkin sketches up his sleeve. Makes you wonder how many tiny game changers we miss because we keep our headphones in.
