Overheard a senior drafter say 'experience beats certs' and it stuck with me

Was grabbing coffee at the supply shop last Tuesday and heard two older drafters talking. One said he learned more in his first 6 months on a job site than in 2 years of classes for Revit. Has anyone else felt like real world projects taught you way more than any training course?

I've seen too many junior guys show up with Autodesk certs and BIM modeler badges, then freeze up when a structural engineer asks them to fix a clash in a 20-story parking garage. One kid my old firm hired had a Certified Professional Revit sticker on his laptop but couldn't tell the difference between a shared parameter and a project parameter when it actually mattered. The real world teaches you how to work under pressure with incomplete info, but certs prove you can sit through a 40-question multiple choice test on a sunny Tuesday. If you're competing against someone with 5 years of field experience and a concrete understanding of how buildings go together, that piece of paper isn't worth the ink on it. What kind of work does your team actually do that makes the certs feel worth it?

And that's the thing, right? The certs are basically a snapshot of someone being able to memorize a textbook for a weekend, not a sign they can handle the mess of a real project. I've seen plenty of guys with the credentials but zero clue how to actually work through a structural fix on a tight deadline, which is basically the whole job.
