Pro tip: Mark your reference lines before you even start your base sheet

I spent 2 hours redoing a floor plan layout because I assumed my first line was square. Turns out it was off by 3 degrees. Now I always snap a chalk line and verify with a 3-4-5 triangle before I commit to anything. Has anyone else had a project go sideways because of a bad starting line?

I read somewhere that even a half degree off at the start can throw your whole project off by inches by the time you get to the other side of a room. That 3-4-5 triangle trick is the only way I learned to trust my lines after a similar mistake on a shed foundation. Now I check my reference line at least twice before I draw anything else.

The 3-4-5 method is gold for sure, but that's actually a right triangle check (you know, for square), not a level line trick. @gibson.sean, you might be mixing it up with the string-line snap method for reference lines, which is what you'd use across a room to keep things straight. Either way, double-checking is the real pro move.
