PSA: A client in Portland gave me a hand sketch that was off by a full inch

I was working on a set of shop drawings for a custom steel stair last week, and the architect's rough sketch had the total rise listed as 108 inches. I built the whole model off that, only to have the fabricator call and say his tape measure on site said 109. Had to redo the stringer layout and all the tread details in about two hours flat. Anyone else get burned by a field measurement that wasn't your fault?

My old foreman in Phoenix had a rule. If a sketch didn't have his initials on the tape line, it was just a guess. I've seen guys write "TYP" for typical on a detail that was totally unique, just to avoid pulling a real number. That inch on your stair is a full hour of weld time and a lot of cussing.

Always verify field measurements yourself.
