Why I think old school drafting paper beats CAD for rough layouts every time

I tried doing a quick floor plan revision for a 3,000 square foot house in AutoCAD last Tuesday and spent 45 minutes fighting with layer settings. Then I grabbed a sheet of vellum and a 2H pencil and had the whole thing sketched out in 15 minutes. Am I the only one who still uses paper for the messy stuff before touching the software?

Oh yeah, fighting with layer settings is the fastest way to remember why paper exists. I keep a roll of trace paper on my desk for exactly this reason, it's way faster to sort out the rough idea there before I even open the software.

The real trick is using paper that's slightly transparent so you can flip it over and trace your own lines backwards, it forces you to see the composition differently. Digital layers make it too easy to keep tweaking the same spot without ever stepping back, you know? Paper has this natural limit where you eventually go "okay this is good enough" and move on. That constraint actually helps more than people give it credit for, especially when you're stuck in an editing loop.
