A guy at the parts counter told me I was overthinking my cutterhead rebuild and it kind of stung
He said he just slaps new bearings in and runs it, meanwhile I spent 3 hours measuring clearances on a 30-year-old Ellicott and now I'm wondering if I'm wasting time on stuff that doesn't matter, has anyone else had a old-timer call them out like that?

Huh, did he say why he thinks clearances don't matter on that old iron?

Yeah @danieltaylor, that take is wild lol. Clearances absolutely matter even on old iron, you'll trash rings and bearings fast without them. Dude must be running it on prayer and luck.
