Appreciation post: The old-timer who swore by a grease pencil for the cutterhead
I thought it was a joke, but marking the wear line on the teeth with one after every shift in Mobile Bay showed me exactly when to rotate them. Anyone have other simple tricks like that?

Honestly, I always thought that was just superstition. Seeing it actually work would change my mind too.

Know exactly what you mean. I used to roll my eyes at the whole idea until my grandma showed me her trick for stopping hiccups. Watched it work three times in a row and just had to admit I was wrong.

...and does it really matter that much? I mean, sure, marking a wear line on teeth is practical enough if you're trying to track rotation schedules. But I've seen guys run cutterheads way past that mark and still get decent results. Maybe it's just me but I feel like people get a little too precious about these old-school tricks. A little grease pencil isn't going to save you if the ground conditions are just bad.
