Changed my mind about pump packings after reading the manual for once
I always thought you needed to crank down on those packing gland nuts to stop leaks. Then I was flipping through the manual for our 8 inch dredge pump last tuesday and saw it says 1/4 turn past hand tight is the spec. I tried it and the drip rate actually went down from like 20 drops a minute to maybe 5. Has anyone else found that following the book actually works better than old timer advice?

Read something similar in a pump handbook from 1995. Guy I work with swears by the old way, tight as you can get it. But that handbook said overtightening wears out the packing fast and scores the shaft sleeve. Tried it on a slurry pump last month, 1/4 turn past hand tight just like you said. Drip rate went from a steady stream to maybe one drop every 10 seconds.
